Review: The Calendar

It was truly an experience reading The Calendar by WM Gunn. While I read all genres, I stick mostly to romance and horror. So, delving into this suspenseful science fiction adventure was a real delight. It was fast-paced - a real page turner. It was quite horrifying to think of, actually. The world is ending and not only do you know that, you know exactly when it’s going to happen and as far as you know - there’s nothing to can stop it. The Calendar is frank apocalyptic sci fi read.
I’ve read WM Gunn before - see my review for The Two Terrors of Tulelake, a historical novel that I enjoyed. While vastly different, I found Gunn’s writing to be equally as engaging with it’s depictions of the human spirit, fear, and fate. The feeling of uncertainty is a universal one, but one that we don’t typically talk about. So, when Gunn places his readers in a position that makes us think about what the end would be like - he really places us there, into a world of uncertainty. It’s actually a terrifying concept, but one that we can safely ponder about with stories such as Gunn’s.
I recommend this book to readers of all genres. It’s going to hit the spot for those who love apocalyptic stories, but I encourage those who read outside of the genre to pick it up. There is much more to The Calendar than the apocalypse - it’s a reflection of our silent doubts and what-ifs.
