On the Bayou by Sean Bridges is a suspense thriller that is set deep in the swamps of Louisiana. Special Agent Jennifer Nash is at the helm of this story. Nash’s career has been derailed after a devastating surveillance operation against human traffickers. Needing a shot at redemption, she’s offered a chance for just that with the Louisiana SWAT team. Things don’t turn out exactly how she expects, however, when she starts to suspect some members she has been working with may have been compromised.

I found Bridges’ writing to be fast-paced and filled with survival details that I found to be intriguing. Naturally, the Louisiana bayou atmosphere was almost its own character! I believe that Bridges did a great job with showcasing the isolation of the bayou to the reader. The isolation mixed in with the mystery of “who can I trust?” was deeply ingrained in energy of the story. Nash was also a great character to follow; she is a strong female protagonist with a clear goal in mind.

On the Bayou is a great story for fans of gritty crime thrillers - with a bonus if you’re into Southern crime stories. It is definitely intense and may even be seen as having horror elements. The swamp on its own is a terrifying element. This is a fantastic read for readers in the mood for an action thriller filled with suspense - True Detective-style.
