Lethal Standoff by DiAnn Mills is unlike other books I read. First, readers of this blog know that I'm primarily a romance and horror reader. I dabble in mystery and thrillers. To begin with, Lethal Standoff is a Christian fiction contemporary suspense novel with romance.

What drew me into the story is that our two main charactgers are a hostage negotiator and a journalist - both very intriguing backgrounds. Plus, the promise of romance always ALWAYS has me interested. And in this case, Lethal Standoff was a satisfying read even though I am not a reader of Christian fiction. I found both Carrington and Levi to be interesting characters with well-rounded backstories. The story itself was filled with many twists and side plots which kept me entertained and engaged. And on a personal note - being able to see/read both points of view from our main characters is a major plus in my opinion. It is definitely something I love in books that I take for granted when authors don't give us that insight. So, big plus there.

I recommend this read to lovers of suspense and for those read with an open mind.

Wicked Serve is the fourth book in Grace Reilly's Beyond the Play series. I'm usually wary of starting off in the middle, or in this case - the end, of series, but I think most romance works in a different way when it comes to series. And I was not wrong! It was very easy to dive into Wicked Serve and enjoy its characters (while also being very enticed to go read the rest of the series. Which I will.)

I loved reading the romance between Izzy and Nik. First, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I was not entering a "new" romance. Izzy and Nik saw each other all summer, and we go into the story at the tail end of that, and the beginning of a new Fall semester. This new semester finds both Izzy and Nik dealing with their own setbacks. Izzy wants to be taken seriously in her volleyball team and remain focused; Nik is having to deal with the fall out of being the leader of his hockey team. And together? Well, together they have a whole lot more they need to deal with.

I love when characters can be flawed, but still very much loved. This is how I felt toward both Izzy and Nik. Each showcase their flaws, wants, and hopes for the reader - and it's those hopes that made each of them more well-rounded. Showing character growth in a story is always welcomed because it makes us care about them. I'm a very character-driven reader and this was top notch for me.

Don't let the cute cover fool you - this book is real spicy 😅 So, if you are sensitive to that, take heed. NEVER assume cute covers mean clean romance. It's just a rule of life now 😄

All in all, if you love sports romances with a little something different - this one is for you. Great characters, great forbidden romance trope - what's not to love?

Hallow by M.R. Dimond is the first book I have read from this author, and it is also the fifth in the Black Orchid Enterprises mystery series. I was able to enjoy the story even coming in later in the series. Dimond does a wonderful job of introducing the characters to the reader, regardless of where you are in the series. HOWEVER, I do recommend that readers go back and start from the beginning to really enjoy the full effect of this story!

Family dynamics is at the center of this story - though there are different storylines throughout the tale. Dimond is able to manuever between the storylines with ease in a fast paced way. What's even more fun is the humor that Dimond is able to intertwine with the happenings of the tale. There truly is a lot that happens throughout the story that will keep you turning the page.

Hallow is a tale for readers who love cute and cozy mysteries. Through detailed and enjoyable characters and humor, the author is able to create a world where we get to know everyone in a small town - and everything that comes along with small towns.

I found Deus Tex Machina by Rob Witherspoon to definitely be a unique read that I didn't see coming. It's a sci-fi-esque story that happens to be pretty funny. One would think that a story that has "death tourism" at the forefront would NOT be funny - but it really is. It does so in a satirical sort of way, but funny and fun nonetheless.

I have read some sci-fi, but not enough to confidently tell you that I understood everything that was going on in this story. Regardless, I found myself enjoying the story and its characters. With my husband's help, I was able to recognize references from Star Trek (he's a Trekkie, through and through), but I am sure there are many more in there that I did not have the knowledge to catch.

Although I found the story to be very entertaining, I did have difficulty keeping up with the different names and technical aspects in the story. This is not new territory for me, however. I tend to have this problem with fantasy and sci-fi stories. So, just a heads up if that happens to you too. Also, as a character-driven reader, I wish that I could have read more that is focused on certain indivdiuals, but again - that is totally a personal preference.

All in all, I believe Deus Tex Machina would be a fantastic read for those who love their sci-fi stories to be more on the lighter side (e.g. humor) while still maintaining its complexity. It was quite a ride, and I think it will check the boxes of many fiction-readers!
